Did you know that the Monelison Volunteer Fire Department has fire agencies respond automatically to calls in Amherst County? One of those agencies is the Big Island Fire Department in Bedford County, which assists with calls in the western part of Amherst County.
On March 19, 2025, at 7:18 PM, the Monelison Volunteer Fire Department and Big Island Fire Department were dispatched to a brush fire on S.S. Nova Road. Brush 21, Tanker 21, Chief 2, Utility 21 along with Big Island Brush 2, Brush 2A, and their Chief 2 responded to the scene.
Upon arrival, approximately 1/4 acre of woodlands was burning. Big Island Chief 2 established command. A fire line was placed around the fire using leaf blowers. Booster and forestry hose lines were established around the fire to quickly extinguish it. Several trees needed to be felled in the area as some were burning too high for firefighters to extinguish from the ground.
We are always grateful for the collaborative relationships we have with other agencies. A big thank you to the men and women of the Big Island Fire Department for their assistance.
