On May 6, 2025, at approximately 9:30 PM, the Monelison Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a gas station on S. Amherst Highway following a motor vehicle accident that resulted in significant damage to a gas pump. Engine 22 (E22) responded promptly to the scene.
Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that the gas pump had sustained considerable damage after being struck by a vehicle. Typically, when a gas pump is hit, a shear pin mechanism disables the flow of fuel to prevent leakage. However, in this instance, the impact was not severe enough to activate the shear pin. Fire personnel quickly took action by activating the Emergency Shut Off to halt the flow of fuel from the damaged pipe.
To mitigate the spill, High-Dry absorbent was applied to the affected area. A technician from the fuel company arrived on scene to assist and ensure there were no additional hazards.
The cause of the accident is currently under investigation by the Amherst County Sheriff's Office. |
